The Place of Engravings. From the 1820's when they first appeared until the turn of the 20th century, Americans relied on engravings for their pictures of the new locomotives -- steam engines given wheels and put on irol rails to carry passengers and goods. Over this period, locomotives became bigger, faster and more numerous. They penetrated up to the Eastern river valleys, over the Appalachian Mountains, and quickly spread across the midwest to the Pacific coast. Engravings were the main source of images that shaped Americans' awareness of this transforming new technoloy and its impact on national life. They show trains at loading docks, passing crowded cities, carrying Civil War troops into battle, and passing the great landmarks across the country.
